During this weekend’s 14th annual Chandler Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Mayor Jay Tibshraeny was presented with a Special Recognition Award.
Mayor Tibshraeny was honored for several reasons, including his support of the Hall of Fame while serving an unprecedented six terms as Mayor; his expansion of athletic and recreational offering in City parks and facilities, including improvements to the Tennis Center, the Chandler Skatepark and Snedigar Sportsplex; his work with Chandler Unified School District to open up school gymnasiums for after-school recreational programs; his work with school districts to locate schools and parks near each other to emphasize youth sport and recreation; and finally, his work to collaborate with schools to construct joint aquatic facilities.
The Special Recognition is awarded to individuals who are not athletes or coaches themselves, but who have contributed greatly to athletics and sports regardless. The Mayor joins previous winners including the Chandler Compadres and ICAN Founder Henry Salinas.
